ANCIENT MAYA BOTANICAL RESEARCH

Species:  suffruticosa
Authority:  Mill.
Common Name:  indigo
Maya Plant Use:  Products, dye or medicine. Indigofera sp. was a valued dye by the ancient Maya. It is the source of “Maya blue” that we see on ceramics and on wall murals. (See Economic Botany). Inkwood (Haematoxylon campechianum) was also used as a plant for dying textiles and other objects.
